I am a bit confused as to what captures the video. Can I use the phone video camera and audio input to capture whatever I want and stream it or do I always have to attach the phone as the processing source and use a DSLR camera as the input source for the video and audio I need to stream.

You can use just your smartphone with Omnistream. The phone’s built-in camera and microphone can capture video and audio and stream it directly — no external camera is required.
Using an external camera (such as a DSLR) is optional. If you choose to connect one, the phone still acts as the processing and streaming device, while the external camera becomes the video/audio input source via a compatible adapter.
