Big Surprise From Remio!
After the 1st hour of installation I was hyped to jump on and leave a review because I could see the possibilities of Remio but I decided to wait a week and expand my usage before leaving the review.
Straight out the gate I was hype on Remio soon after installing the additional browser extension. Seeing it gather all my navigations and aggregating it all into a centralize 'webpage' knowledge base within the Remio app was a good start.
Using the browser extension is actually helpful while I'm conducting research which is a surprise to me as most browser extension get in the way more than they help. Being able to pop open/close a chat side panel works well especially since you can control the size of the side panel with a simple click-drag.
The App itself is the real winner though.
A simple side bar with a middle landing context window and once items selected a far right popout additional context window. What everyone has grown accustomed to. It works and makes navigation straight forward and natural.
It does take some getting used to how you want to see things (e.g. Make it Note, Add it to a Collection, Add to Favorites, etc) for later but provides a lot of options and flexibility.
IMO where Remio really shines is it's AI Provider Flexibility.
I've tried a bunch of tools, and honestly, the AI provider flexibility is unmatched. You aren't locked into their cloud models if you don't want to be.
The beauty is in the options: you can use the built-in Remio AI, go full BYOK, or even set up a Custom Provider to hook up your own local LLM running on LM Studio or Ollama. When I setup Ollama and later Openrouter it was easy to understand the field requirements once I jumped on their Discord and saw a couple screenshots.
For us Straico users, this is a massive deal. As another reviewer pointed out, Straico's API doesn't support tool calling, so pretty much no other tool like Remio can integrate with it properly (well Rabbitholes but no tool calling still).
But here's the kicker with Remio because of how robust their BYOK and custom provider setup is, you can work around it. You could simply plug an Openrouter API key into the Custom Provider section
Want to save money? Go even deeper and configure individual "free" Openrouter models (like Google Gemma or Mistral) within that same section. This level of tinkering to optimize cost and performance is something you just don't get elsewhere.
That said, I feel the search functionality itself is a bit of an overlooked powerhouse. It's good, but with all this data pouring in, I'd love to see them supercharge it with more advanced filters or semantic depth. Imagine the possibilities. Like X1 Search but better.
The mobile app is phone-ready and the capture-to-desktop sync is pretty sweet. But for it to really turn the corner, it needs those Knowledge Base Insights that the desktop app shows. Being able to see the collective connections and themes of everything I've captured, right on my phone, would be a game-changer. Maybe that's something the team can tackle way down the road.
And like others have said dark mode is a must and when they implement the device sync that will be a massive win for users like me.

Apr 14, 2026Thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful review. We really appreciate that you took the time to go beyond first impressions and explore remio more deeply before sharing your experience!🙏
We’re especially happy to hear that the browser extension, desktop workflow, and AI provider flexibility stood out. The ability to use remio AI, BYOK, or custom/local providers like Ollama, LM Studio, and OpenRouter is a big part of how we want users to stay in control.
Your feedback on advanced search, mobile Knowledge Base Insights, dark mode, and device sync is spot on, and exactly the kind of directionally useful input we value.
Thanks again for the support and for articulating remio’s potential so clearly!
